About
I am Meredith, the founder and creator of TeachWriting.org and Bespoke ELA. I have taught high school English for 10+ years in Dallas, Chicago, and New York City, and I hold a M.A. in Literature from Northwestern University. I have always had a connection to the written word-- through songwriting, screenplay writing, and essay writing-- and I enjoy the process of teaching students how to express their ideas. I enjoy life with my daughter and sweet Yorkie named Teddy.
Before venturing into the classroom, I spent time as a creative writer and songwriter, writing screenplays and short stories as well as songs to perform at local coffee shop venues. As a pianist during my childhood, I discovered The Beatles and never turned back. The song “She’s in Love with me and I’ll Feel Fine” changed my life- literally. It took that one guitar riff for me to know that words and music are both powerful forces and that art is essential to life. This is why today as a college professor and high school teacher, I take a more humanities-driven approach to teaching my courses. I try to integrate artistic movements in both visual arts and musical arts alongside key literary movements so that students can understand how historical events gave birth to artistic movements.
It is my absolute joy to explore humanities-driven topics with my students in engaging ways that will motivate them to read and explore world literature through a new lens. I work hard to motivate and encourage students from every walk of life. The Beatles turned me into a teacher, and I hope that as a teacher I can inspire students to grapple with the larger questions and issues of life through the humanities.
